Alright this has been on my mind awhile now since I completed Dissidia 012 and I am going to give my own little review of this game. Now I loved the first Dissidia I liked the story, the interactions with the characters, the gameplay, well pretty much everything though there were a few things that nagged me a little though it didn't hamper my experience. So when a sequel was announced and such I was really excited, then it got changed to a prequel and then as it got closer to the date it was coming out I got worried it wouldn't stand up to it's predecessor. So lets find out shall we if this is a legend to be remembered or should we let it fall into the depths of the void and be forgotten for all time.
Story:
Right I know this game has been out awhile or some people might not know the story so I will try my best not to spoil too much and not name as many names as possible. The story itself is in some ways is engaging its just a shame that the other 98.99% is as boring and as epic as a wet sponge. Also there are many plot holes connecting this prequel to its predecessor sequel about the size of the Bermuda Triangle. It all feels strange and none of it makes much sense even when it gets to the ending, the relationship between the main cast is alright when it comes to Lightning's group however the antagonists that our heroes come across and fight even to the final battle feel as though they didn't want to put them up against their proper FF counterparts. When it would make more sense that way and would make a good reference to their respective problems in their FF's. Also something that gets on my nerves is how they are pushing Lightning to being right in this game as the people you would expect to be the most brave and strong people that take on hordes of demons, crazy power hungry deities, and the occasional giant monster they wouldn't do what they do as a "GREAT PLAN" in this way. As when you think about it carefully at the cost of taking some of the most beloved characters and making them totally out of their own characters it makes them look downright stupid, all to make Lightning look in the right. Now I know I'm going off a tagent here but bear with me as it's something I have to get off my chest as I think Square lately have been pushing for Lightning to be "remembered" as the best character of the FF series. When all the other characters were not pushed as much as she is and are remembered greatly for their own roles in the FF universe by it's diverse fanbase. This returns to this game as this suffers from a giant love letter to Lightning as it will blatantly say to you she is in the right and everyone else is wrong and we should all follow her. This is not how you should make a character remembered not at the cost of assassinating everyone else character and/or intelligence. Even more stupid and when you think about it this game's true successful antagonist is the least likely in all of Dissidia as he is in the background and causes the threat to be there in the first place and you only fight him once in all of the game. Overall from my text you can probably tell what I think of it but if not here goes. It feels like a horny fan struck ten year old wrote this story and even up to the ending it feels not as epic as they are making it out to be even with the threat they are fighting and supposedly beat in this game they are still in the predecessor sequel making this game's story absolutely pointless.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is pretty much like it's predecessor in most of it but with the added EX revenge, new moves and new characters it feels more frantic and tactical as you have to decide whether to save for counters or go all out on the offensive with HP attacks or try to build up brave as much as possible before taking off their health. The new added characters are a welcome as they all have their own moves, styles of play such as Yuna summoning creatures to help her fight, Laguna with his long ranged arsenal of guns and missiles, Tifa with close range fist and leg attacks with an added DBZ inspired instant transition to get the drop on her opponents from behind, Kain with fast paced lance attacks with combos, etc and none feel too overpowered then the other. Overall this adds up to 6 new characters playable as soon as you start up the game with 3 new secret unlockable characters to the already 22 strong character lineup. What also makes this game an absolute beast is the extra content such as the world map which is basically the map from FF 1 but all connected up together with a few small islands, many new summon spirits to use in battle to change the pace or the advantage of a fight over to you which also you can buy new summons from moggles on this world map with KP (Kupo Points), reports with added story of past cycles in the war of order versus chaos, extra costumes made from the artwork Yoshitaka Amano, etc. Though there are a few things that bug me number 1 Lightning is the only character from FF 13 to be in this game in other words no antagonist makes an appearance when there are clearly two choices of who to take from that game. Instead she steals the Warrior of Light's antagonist Garland which feels cheap really cheap, number 2 some FF's get no extra characters added personally two of my other favorite FF's 6 and 9 didn't get any added fans of these games like me will be dissapointed by this. This also includes FF's 1-3 and though 5 gets an added antagonist it doesn't get a protagonist added, number 3 for some weird reason they added the entire first game in this game with hardly any changes and a few slight references to the prequel sequel though with the exception of adding the world map to it now this makes me feel they wasted a lot of space. Which could of been used for more characters, or something else more productive then the entire first game if I wanted to play that I'll just play that one and even if I didn't have it I can guarantee that shops both offline and online will have this game preowned or new and be very much more cheaper then getting a hooker for dinner. Though one of the modes I liked quite a bit with its own sort of story was a mode where you played a cycle where Chaos goes beastly and destroys everything and everyone and you get to make your own party and mix and match people from both the protagonists and antagonists and travel the world map and taking on dungeons all to take down the new Chaos. Now there are a few other modes such as create your own quest which is basically create your own little story and fights but with no way of sharing em its just self satisfaction and a dungeon crawler with cards. This aspect of the game is something I cannot fault with some questioning details the amount of content is enough to send your brain in a rush which will make you go to the store to get a bag full of sugar to give you the extra energy to deal with it.
Presentation:
This game presents itself in Square's true fashion of being absolutely astounding for being on a PSP. the graphics are excellent with some very good effects and each character in their own way feel really powerful when used the way they were intended to be used. Some of the music brings this game down a bit however this is mostly due to the newer tracks and you will more likely be finding yourself if your a hardcore FF fan like me be looking Nobuo Uematsu music's as I find them much better by far then the remixes with a few exceptions. The voice acting is passable in some cases when in others it just seems laughable in a sense such as hearing the most wimpiest standup line to Kefka ever, some overacting on certain situations, etc.
Conclusion:
Overall this game has a wealth of content that will please fans of the original Dissidia. However with the story, lacking of new characters from certain FF's, some of the music, the entirety of the first game's inclusion. It will feel as though it was a wasted opportunity by Square to make a spectacular game that has wasted space on the disk, the added pointless fan service and the overall lack of catering to all fans while just concentrating on a few FF's only and too much concentration on Lightning rather then the entire cast as a whole with their opinions. It feels like they are shoving Lightning like they are shoving pure cocaine up your arse. But with its gameplay and the changes they made to the fighting system alone with the difficulty to the challenging but yet cheap computer who will occasionally have way more levels then you even sometimes going beyond level 100 it feels like Square are draining you of your time, patience, sanity and most of.... MONEY!
