Some of you may know and some of you may not that I AM A TOTAL RPG NERD! It's my fave gaming genre, they always contain the best stories, the most rewarding fighting system and always the best for character development. So let's the ground running here by listing and talking about some of our fave RPG's : ] I'll start off with praising one of my fave RPG's Suikoden 2 ..never heard of it? Yeah probably not cus for some reason it didn't stay on the store shelves for long but they are serious COLLECTORS ITEMS NOW! Going for $50 ..with good reason to. Think it's one of the only RPG's where you have over 120 characters to play as. It has a kick ass fighting system, an amazing soundtrack, a great array of character (each looking uniqe) a 100 hour++ Story line, Nice 2D Animation. I can't say enough for the game you just need to Youtube some clips of it : )

Pokemon. But other than that I haven't played many RPGs. I turned on Dragon Quest on the NES once but didn't play it. I played through some of Dragon Quest....VI I think. I don't remember if it was six or seven but I stopped after a while. Oh but I have played Kingdom Hearts I, II, and most of 358/2 Days. First will always be a classic to me, second one was only good because of the Organization, which makes 358/2 also rather enjoyable but my attention was divided near the end of the game and I ended up getting distracted from playing. That's my history with RPGs. Favorite being Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts is okay but not a favorite.

I enjoyed Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn very much. It had a decent length, like at least 20 hours, and it has nearly 80 characters you can play as, I personally like Shinon.

Did anyone here play Tales of Symphonia (Game Cube)?
The characters are likable and humorous, the fighting system is real time (but allows for strategic pausing if you want to) in a small 3D area (so you can run around and evade attacks or attack your enemies from behind), and that game has like THE best, most gripping plot I've ever played. OoO
It starts out as a medival fantasy setting ... but then the villains suddenly turn out to have security cameras. (omg, twist!)
True, the game takes a while till it gets really intensely gripping (gee, I remember almost giving up after getting stuck at a boss fight shortly before the first big twist).
Without spoiling too much, I can say, that everything you believed in the first ~30 hours of gametime turns out to be wrong. The boundaries between good and evil get blurry, and people actually have reasons for their actions. And just when you think you actually beat the game, everything changes AGAIN. And just when you think you actually beat the game this time, everything changes AGAIN. And AGAIN. And AGAIN. And AGAIN. A heroes' work is never finished ... and continues in Tales of Symphonia 2 for the Wii.

I really want to play kingdom hearts but i am without a Playstation. 8(

I played Tales of Symphonia, but didn't get too far. All this babbling about good and evil and God was boring me to tears. I hate it when RPG's push the "ULTIMATE GOOD VERSUS ULTIMATE DARKNESS" theme to much in your face. Suikoden is much more subtle and down to earth about it, which is why I agree with zody there. Suikoden 2, and 5, are awesome. Altough I might give Tales of Symphonia another shot in the future. Playing the Lufia 2 remake on my DS now, and giving Pokemon colleseum a go on the gamecube, mostly for potential parody reasons. Sorry Eless

Hmm seems like I'm one of those nerds that likes those really RARE RPG's D: but erm most of my faves are 2D Animated classics like Breath Of Fire 4, Odin Sphere and Paper Mario : B
But it says a lot that most of my fave RPG's are going for $50 on E-Bay these days D:
As for Kingdom Hearts, I LOVED the first one..and for some reason never played the others, I think the fandom put me off and the fact the Square characters had more of a role then the Disney ones which kind of killed off the whole excitement of having Disney characters there in the first place!

Well, for a game that puts a BIG focus on a crossover with Disney, all the games after the first put more focus on the Square characters than the Disney characters. Not even an equal focus for each side, either. That's what he meant.

giving Pokemon colleseum a go on the gamecube, mostly for potential parody reasons. Sorry Eless Hmm... didn't think there was that much to parody in that one. Pokémon games don't tend to have particularly strong storylines, though that gives you more freedom. I've not played a great deal of RPGs, mainly just Pokémon, Kingdom Hearts and Super Paper Mario, which was less like an RPG than its predecessors. I have Dragon Quest IX but I haven't got round to playing it. Overall, I do enjoy RPGs, and the ones I have played have been fun, if a little long. The main problem I have is that they all tend to look the same, at least from boxart, so it's difficult to which to get when I see them in shops...

Hmm... didn't think there was that much to parody in that one. . That's what you think. I love how 2 kidnappers try to stop the hero from calling the cops on them by challenging him to a Pokémon battle. As if losing a Pokémon match would render him incapeble of still calling the cops. Or more hilarious when the hero tells other people not to go into the villian's hideout. "It's too dangerous here!" yeah! They might challenge you to a pokémon match..AND YOU MIGHT LOSE IT! Considering everyone is always having pokemon matches, and mathamatically spoken, you have to lose about 50% of the matches, it's amusign to me how everyone's soo overeacting from losing a match. Of course later on you see someone lying on the ground in a terrible condition, because he lost a match.

Aren't most Pokémon games like that, though? Their idea of "danger" is usually just "losing your Pokémon battle and with that, a percentage of your money". Any game with no sense of "game over" has no real serious sense of danger, in my opinion.
Anyway, hummm, RPG's.... Well, I've always had a thing for Strategy RPG's, even though I don't mind me some classic turnbased either from time to time. One RPG that I really remember liking the crap out of was Bahamut Lagoon for the SNES. It was never officially released in English, but there's a fantastic full translation for it available, in the vein and quality of the old SNES "Tales of Phantasia" or "Seiken Densetsu 3" translations (two other RPG's I remember really liking, though I never finished either of those completely, unlike Bahamut Lagoon).
I'm not gonna summarize the plot here since there's places on the 'net that do a way better job than I could, but even though the battles themselves are semi-turnbased (as I recall you go through a single round of battle per "encounter"), the encounters themselves are on a Strategy-RPG basis a-la Fire Emblem or Shining Force. Add to that the ability of area-attack and manipulation (for instance, land an area fire spell on grasslands and the grass burns away, giving different properties to that particular tile) and you get pretty strategic battles. I realize I'm overusing the word strategy in this summary, but I really reccomend any who enjoy Strategy-RPG's and aren't afraid of a little twist to the formula to check it out. Though I will say that it's a game to be played with a walkthrough on hand, not so much for how to beat it, but rather so as not to miss any of the plentiful secret hidden items, scenes and characters throughout the story - also for tips on raising your dragons (which you should totally make as strong as possible - every group of 4 players in your party has its own dragon "linked" to it, the stats and element affinity of which also affects the stats and attack-element of the linked party members).
On the turn-based side of things, I really liked "Costume Quest" on XBLA (also PSN). It's really short and on the easy side, but it's a funny and charming timewaster. =)
